ESPN STAR Sports, Asia’s leading sports broadcaster is all set to televise live & exclusive the biggest soccer tournament of the year – FIFA Confederations Cup 2009. The tournament gets underway in South Africa starting June 14, 2009. Sports channel ESPN & STAR Sports will showcase live & exclusive all the 16 matches of the tournament.
This is the eight edition of the prestigious FIFA Confederations Cup. The tournament is held every four years where winners of the six regional championships from CAF, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, UEFA, AFC, and OFC are eligible to play. The host country and the FIFA World Cup winner are included in order to bring the number of participants to eight. The 8 teams participating in this year’s tournament include South Africa, Italy, New Zealand, Iraq, Spain, United States, Egypt and defending champions Brazil.
All teams have been divided into two groups - A & B. Group A will have host nation South Africa (Host Nation) along with New Zealand (OFC Nations Cup Winner), Iraq (2007 AFC Asian Cup Winner) and Spain (UEFA Euro 2008 winner). Group B comprises of the United States (2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup Winner), Egypt (2008 African Cup of Nations winner), Brazil (COPA America 2007 winner) and Italy (2006 FIFA World Cup winner). The only newcomers in the 2009 edition are Iraq and the two European teams – reigning world champions Italy and European champions Spain.
The tournament is expected to produce pulsating soccer which will keep soccer fans across the globe hooked to television. Tune into ESPN & STAR Sports for the live telecast of the mega event.
