Tehelka felicitated its debut artist, on April 25, Monday, at Ambassador Hotel, Sujan Singh Park, New Delhi. The press conference in the afternoon consisted of a felicitation speech by Mr Rajnish Ohri, Business Head, Tehelka and a live performance by Rabbi followed by a Q&A with Rabbi, Tarun Tejpal and Minty Tejpal who is credited with initially spotting the talent in Rabbi. Media consisting of English, regional press, TV channels, etc turned out in large numbers to cover this first of its kind events.
The evening felicitation function at Taj Ambassador saw the who’s who of Delhi gracing in large numbers (estimated at 500 odd) to listen to the soul-stirring music of Rabbi. The evening function saw Mr Rajnish Ohri inviting Mr Tarun Tejpal to felicitate Rabbi’s mother and Rabbi on the historic achievement as also brief nostalgic speeches of the journey of Tehelka and Rabbi during the years of Rabbi’s struggle by Tarun, Rabbi’s mother, Rabbi and Minty Tejpal.
The evening brought together Rabbi’s diverse fan list including Army Chief JJ Singh, actor–turned–politician Vinod Khanna, Indi-pop singer Shibani Kashyap, socialite Bina Ramani, Feroz Gujaral, corporate hotshots – Jagdish Khattar, Sunil Duggal, Rajeev Karwal, Ashwin Malik, etc.
Rabbi told a packed hall. “I had lot of free time .I would scream to the songs of Meatloaf. I had time to fall in love with my guitar”. Then Rabbi did what he does best-he sang Bulla Ki Jana, Tere Bin, Jugni and a track from his forthcoming album Challa. For Shibani Kashyap, Rabbi is “not a commercial package. It’s like he is telling a story, not selling his songs”. As for the singer, he is working on a second album which he says will be “musically different”.
The event was co-sponsored by Nokia, Maruti, Hewlett Packard, Coca Cola, Mcdowells, Kingfisher and Chateau Indage.
