Dharmakanya is a powerful portrait of a courageous, upright young woman against a landscape of power politics and emotional intrigue.
Dharmakanya is set in the town of Vidyanagari, which has been ruled by the powerful Dhurandhar family of rich landlords, for generations. But hatred has split the family into two; the two zamindar brothers Dhondiraj (Dadasaheb - Ashit Ambekar) and Bhupendraraj (Rajasaheb - Gururaj Avdhani) rule the two parts, Dhondewadi and Bhopewadi.
Their mother, Vidyatai Dhurandar (Sandhyatai Mhatre), has declared that the ancestral property won't be given to anyone while she's alive but will be handed over to the one who faithfully takes care of the estate. Although she has divided it equally, the two families are constantly at loggerheads with one another, and Vidyatai stays alone in her old manor away from the constant rivalry and tension.
Amidst this taut atmosphere, on the threshold of the two lands in Bhopewadi, Priya (Khushboo Tawade) lives with her father, old schoolteacher Gajanan Joshi. Priya's mother is no more and she has been brought up by her father. She helps her father run his school, and is a beautiful, kind girl, adored by everyone in the wadi. She helps the poor and is a favourite of the kids.
Chandrakant (Raj Patil), Dadasaheb's second son, falls in love with Priya and this generates immense tension in the atmosphere. Rajasaheb insists that Priya should marry his wife's nephew Gopya, who is mentally challenged. This is a shock to everyone, but they have no choice except to give in to the autocratic Rajasaheb.
In the midst of the raging battle between the two families, Priya is caught with no option but to struggle and fight for herself as well as her ageing father, and to uphold her integrity.
Priya steps into a new phase of her life, but with old questions to answer and injustices to fight. Slowly she realizes who is the person creating and deepening the divisions within the family, but will she be able to overcome this person's power? Will she be able to find her true love in the face of dominance from the parents? And is it possible that happiness is written in her fate?
