Hindustan Times celebrated the third edition of the Hindustan Times Scholarship Programme, one of HT’s most unique and successful endeavors on Friday 08 February. The HT Scholarship Programme is the largest recognition programme for school students in Mumbai and it rewards the brightest young minds of the city.

Hindustan Times Scholarship Programme, is a unique platform provided to students and open to one and all. This year, the programme saw an unprecedented response, and engaged with 280 schools from across the city and received applications from 57,000 students between standard V and standard IX. From the applications 150 students were shortlisted based on an all round assessment of academics, extracurricular activities, community service and an essay. The topic of the essay was “What would you do in a world without TV, the Internet and Mobile phones”.  The final 50 winners (10 students from each standard) were chosen after an interview round with senior HT editors. The 50 winners have received Rs. 50,000 each to further their educational ambitions.

Ranjani Krishnaswami, Marketing Head (West and South), Hindustan Times, said “The Scholarship Programme is a translation of HT’s belief that education is not merely one of the cornerstones of our society; it is the most important thing that will define our and our children’s futures. We have consistently and constructively engaged with education through a number of endeavors such as Campus Calling, Mission MBA, Top Schools and more”

The 50 winners were awarded at a ceremony which was inaugurated by the Honorable Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranarayanan who spoke about the importance of parents and teachers coming together to further the cause of education – “We want a bright future, we want a bright country, we want bright citizens, congratulations Hindustan Times for undertaking this important initiative.”

The event continued with some special guests – Padma Shri recipient Kajol and Olympic medalist Vijender Singh joined Hindustan Times Mumbai editor, Soumya Bhattacharya, who had encouraging words for the students – “remember how special all of you are, and whatever you do in life, whoever you become, don’t do one thing – never, ever stop believing in yourself.”

On the occasion, Kajol said “we are all here to further the cause of education and better our country because one day all of you kids will be in charge!” Vijender Singh reaffirmed the importance of sport in an all round education when he said “learning is not all about academics.”

The ceremony concluded with the 50 winners being presented certificates of achievement as their classmates, parents and teachers cheered them on.
