Another week has passed with its share of promotions, and as in most weeks gone by, it was dominated by promotions from the consumer durables segment.

They're a relentless lot, these marketers of consumer durables. Constantly trying to grow their markets, constantly wooing the consumer with promotion after promotion. A most cursory glance at the major sales promotions of the week gone by, will bear out this fact.
In Mumbai, on purchasing a Sharp Microwave oven, consumers were not only entitled to a free gift, but could also avail of free microwave cooking lessons in the comfort of their homes. In Delhi, all Thomson colour TVs had discounts of up to Rs 3,000. Also in Delhi, an Altima 580 music system from Thomson got the buyer a GE cordless phone worth Rs 3,000.
The other significant promotions in the durables category were as follows. Consumers in Delhi could get up to Rs 9,500 off on a new Hitachi Kaimin air conditioner in exchange of an old air conditioner. This offer was open till August 20, 2000.
Venus water heaters continued to be retailed Rs 700 cheaper in West Bengal and Sikkim. In Bangalore, Usha fans had a wall clock worth Rs 150 as a freebie. Again, in Bangalore, a free umbrella came with every Bajaj iron. When it rains, it pours!
Things would have been pretty hot in Delhi kitchens if Nirlep had its way. For, with every Nirlep Select pan there was a gift for the consumer. And the gifts included holidays in Switzerland and Singapore, and washing machines, among other things.
BPL was offering up to Rs 3,500 off on a new cooking range in exchange of an old one.
Dressed to kill! In Delhi, it was more like undress to kill. Consumers got up to Rs 150 off on a new San Frisco trouser - in exchange of an old one. In Bangalore, two Oxemberg garments worth Rs 1,000-and-above fetched shoppers a shirt.
Bombay Dyeing had a series of promotions on its bed sheets, towels and furnishings for Mumbaikars; material worth Rs 750 got a medium-sized bath towel worth Rs 144. With material worth Rs 1,050, a satin dyed bed sheet worth Rs 225 came free. And purchases worth Rs 1,450 got consumers a printed bed sheet and a pillow cover, worth a total of Rs 291.
On to foods… In Mumbai and nearby areas, on returning an empty 250 gm pouch of Manikchand Parimal tea, consumers were eligible to win 51 prizes over the week. Prizes included BPL S718 two-in-ones, Prestige 3L SS pressure cookers and VIP 550 Signet bags.
In the NCR of Delhi, there was a special price off on a pack of Safal peas.
A look at the other important promotions of the week. Bajaj scooters continued to be cheaper by Rs 1,500 in Delhi. In Mumbai, getting a SatyamOnline Internet connection entitled surfers to participate in the ongoing Kaun Banega Carpati contest, where prizes include a Ford Ikon, four LG refrigerators, Casio Palm Tops, 3COM web cameras, among others. And the August issue of Filmfare had with a bottle of Parachute Dandruff Solution coconut hair oil for readers.
