Gullu Sen quits Rediffusion DY&R

With this move, Sen pulls the curtains on his nine-year stint at Rediffusion

First it was Charles Berley. Now it is Sabyasachi Sen. Rediffusion DY&R's Delhi office has seen two quick and high profile exits in recent times.

After a nine-year stint at Rediffusion DY&R, Sabyasachi - better known as Gullu Sen - national creative director and vice-president, has put in his papers. "I just wanted a break. After 19 years of gruelling existence in this industry I really wanted some time off and entirely to myself. I don't really have a concrete plan before me at this point in time," he told agencyfaqs!.

Sen says what's keeping him busy these days are some ‘interesting' projects, which couldn't have been pursued if he held his full-time job at Rediffusion. "I am in between a couple of projects, which will take shape in the next 10-15 days," he says. "I guess in another two months I shall have worked out something concrete for myself."

Sen refuses to specify how he would like to plan his next move. "I could start something on my own. But it looks unlikely at this point in time." Very enlightening! So is he teaming up with ex-colleague Sandeep Goyal in his much-speculated-about-in-the-media venture? He is equally evasive on this one. "Our friendship goes back to the time when he were working together in HTA (now JWT). But unfortunately he hasn't made me an offer, nor have I accepted it," he laughs.

Be it his own thing or partnering a friend in a new venture, Sen knows what it takes to build a business ground up. He was the one who set up the Delhi branch of Interact Vision (the second agency of Mudra Communications), where he moved from Trikaya Grey (now Grey Worldwide India) more than a decade back. "The entrepreneurship concept was not so popular in the advertising business those days (1991-94)," he says. "We built the agency and many small brands along with it."

His contribution to the growth of Rediffusion too is indisputable. Joining the agency in 1994 in the new business development group, Sen and (Sandeep) Goyal pushed the agency's billings northwards to establish it as one of the Top 5 agencies in Delhi in just two years. "It was all due to some aggressive new business pitches we did," reminisces Sen.

But then it is obvious he has no regrets. "One has to move on - sooner or later. That's exactly what I am doing." © 2003 agencyfaqs!
