Yahoo! and Jagran to launch Hindi news portal

The news and current affairs portal in Hindi will be launched in the second half of 2007

The Indian language online story has received a major boost with leading portal Yahoo! India and print media giant Jagran Prakashan announcing a partnership for the launch of a Hindi portal.

To be launched after June 2007, the portal will feature news and current affairs. The content will be provided by Jagran, which publishes ‘Dainik Jagran’, the most widely circulated newspaper in the country.

Of late, the Indian online industry has seen a growing focus on Indian language. Yahoo!, MSN, and Google have been furiously launching content in Indian languages. This is, however, the first time that a large international portal has entered into a joint venture with a domestic content player.

Incidentally, Yahoo! is already available in seven Indian languages. In a statement, George Zacharias, managing director, Yahoo! India, said, “The Yahoo! India-Jagran partnership will reshape the online Hindi news and current affairs landscape in terms of compelling customer experience, user engagement and monetisation.”

While Yahoo! India will manage the advertising sales and serving for the new co-branded property, the two partners will share the graphical and keyword advertising revenues generated. Both companies will also partner in distributing Yahoo! India’s search and small and medium business offerings.

Clearly, the association will not only open up fresh market space for Yahoo!, it will also make Jagran a player in the fast-growing Internet space. Adds Sanjay Gupta, CEO, Jagran Prakashan Ltd, “We bring in content, while Yahoo brings in technology and their understanding of Internet audiences to provide an unparalleled Internet experience in the Hindi space.”

In another announcement, Yahoo! said it will be offering unlimited storage to its e-mail users in India. It plans to integrate its instant messaging platform, Yahoo! Messenger, with its Yahoo! Mail beta service. This will be offered to users in India by May 2007.
