CNN’s ‘Young Journalist Award’ gets older

The channel has extended the upper age limit – from 26 to 28 – for its ‘Young Journalist Award’ as part of its strategy to introduce a new category, ‘Cameraperson of the Year’

CNN has extended the upper age limit for its ‘Young Journalist Award’ from 26 to 28 in its third edition. The channel has also introduced a new category this year, ‘Cameraperson of the Year’.

Mallika Kapur, the London-based reporter and producer for CNN International, says, “Every year, we try to bring a fresh approach to these awards. Last time, we included entries from Pakistan along with those from India. For the third edition, we have introduced a special category, ‘Cameraperson of the Year’, to recognise and reinforce the importance of the cameraperson in news gathering.”

The awards are given under three categories: television, print and online. The categories are open to all young journalists working in India and Pakistan. The last date for submission of entries is October 15, 2005.

The best entry in each category wins the title ‘CNN Young Journalist of the Year’ and gets to observe and assist at the CNN news bureau in Atlanta for a week in April-May 2006. The runners-up get a chance to assist the CNN news bureau in New Delhi or Islamabad, depending on the country to which he/she belongs.

The winner of the ‘Cameraperson of the Year’ award will get a chance to assist the CNN news bureau in Hong Kong for a week.

Like its preceding editions, CNN YJA 2005 will also be judged by a panel comprising distinguished television and print journalists.

Kapur says categorically, “We always encourage entries from the vernacular media, even if it means translating their entire work into English, as we receive a good number of entries from the regional and local press every year.”
