SaharaOne plays its ‘Superstars’ trump card

An adaptation of the international format show, ‘Performing As’, the show will go on air from September 11, 2006, but the auditions will start from August 10 in cities such as Ludhiana, Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal and Mumbai

Since its inception, SaharaOne has been struggling to find itself a niche among the general entertainment channels, but success hasn’t come easy for it.

Now the channel seems ready to play its trump card, ‘Superstars’, a talent hunt show produced by Endemol. The show will go on air from September 11, 2006, but the auditions will start from August 10 in cities such as Ludhiana, Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal and Mumbai.

Purnendu Bose, COO, SaharaOne Television, is quite hopeful that the show will turn the channel’s fortunes on to a more positive path.

Bose justifies his statement saying that in a nation where people are obsessed with films to the extent that there are fan clubs and even temples dedicated to film stars, the show has the potential to do very well.

According to Bose, last year, SaharaOne saw a 430 per cent growth in terms of revenue. This has provided the channel with the strength and confidence to bet on a bigger show with a bigger investment.

Bose says that SaharaOne is ranked number two in terms of ‘opportunity to see’.

The new show is an adaptation of the international format show, ‘Performing As’, in which the contestants are required to act, look and sound like their favourite film stars. Sahara One is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring its success. The prize money is big – Rs 1 crore – and the winner also gets to star in a Sahara film production. The judges include Shiamak Davar and actress Urmila Matondkar.
