Ashish Bhasin, director, IMAG, Lintas India, and president, SSC&B Lintas, has been invited to be a judge at the 54th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in June 2007. Bhasin will be on the Cannes Direct jury. In 2005, Ramesh Iyengar, managing director, Select Direct, was a jury member in the same category.
The Direct Lions jury, chaired by Rory Sutherland, vice-chairman, Ogilvy Group, UK, will meet in Cannes and commence voting on June 13. The festival is slated to take place June 17-23. The winners in this category will be announced on June 18.

Speaking on India’s chances at a lion or two this time around, Bhasin says, “As direct marketing is very measurable and response oriented, creatives have to be more bang-on here than in any other medium.”
“In India, direct marketing is at an evolving stage and it has a long way to go,” comes his grounded comment. “Having said that, this judging opportunity gives me the chance to compare Indian work with entries from abroad, which will give me a better perspective on how we can improve.”
In his career span, Bhasin has judged various awards at the Indian level, including the Effies, the Emvies and the Chennai Ad Club Awards (when he was the head of Lintas, Chennai). At the Asian level, Bhasin has judged the Asia Pacific Media Forum in Indonesia. In a sense, his brush with Cannes is his second judging experience outside of India.
More than 25,000 ads from all over the world are showcased and judged at the Cannes Festival. Winning agencies receive the highly coveted Lion trophy, honouring the most creative from amongst TV/cinema, print, outdoor, interactive, radio, sales promotion and integrated advertising, as well as the best media and direct marketing solutions. A programme of seminars, workshops and keynote speakers is also presented.
