Tendulkar turns into a comic hero

Total Multimedia Limited and Virgin Comics are set to create a new comic book and animation character based on superstar cricketer Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar, the master blaster, might be out of form on the field, but his form off the field is still on a high. He is set to don a new role as he enters the world of comics as a character called ‘The Master Blaster’.

India’s most successful batsman has been signed by Virgin Comics, which, along with its partner, Total Media, plans to launch a comic series based on a character modelled on Tendulkar. The character will also be used for animation series and online games.

“Sachin is a living legend and the perfect choice to be immortalised as a new superhero character that will exist for generations to come,” says Virgin Comics CEO, Sharad Devarajan.

Tendulkar turns into a comic hero
Virgin Comics was founded in 2005 by Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, along with author Deepak Chopra, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and entrepreneurs Sharad Devarajan, Gotham Chopra and Suresh Seetharaman.

In India, Virgin launched its first original comic book series in 2006, with titles ‘Sadhu’, ‘Devi’, ‘Snake Woman’ and ‘Ramayana 3392 AD’. All four titles were also launched in the USA last year. ‘Devi’, which was launched in the USA in July 2006, has been a huge success there.

The comic is sold at Rs 10 per copy in India, $3 per copy in the US and €3 per copy in Europe.

The move by Virgin Comics is the first time a sportsman has been made into a comic superhero.

Expected to hit the stands in August, the first issue will see the new superhero character take on 11 evil demons risen from the dead with the sword of the masters, a noble weapon created thousands of years ago.
