In regional finals of Delhi, Mercantile beat Metro Communications by 3 wickets

Mercantile from Delhi have reached the national semi finals of the Amar Ujala Agency & Media Cricket League 2009 to be played in Mumbai on February 21, by defeating Metro Communications by 3 wickets. The Cricket League has been organised by afaqs!

Metro Communications won the toss and chose to bat. Metro Communications were all out in the last ball of the last (tenth) over, managing only 80 runs. Mercantile reached its final score for the loss of four wickets.

On February 14 & 15, the regional quarter finals, semifinals, and the regional final matches for Delhi of the Amar Ujala Agency & Media Cricket League 2009 were played. A total of eight teams had qualified for the Delhi quarter-finals, out of the 24 participating teams. They were - NDTV Media, Studio: Thorn, Indiatimes, DraftFCB Ulka, Planman Media, Mercantile Advertising, Metro Communications and Maxus Global.

The first quarterfinal match was played between Planman Media and NDTV Media. Planman Media won the toss and elected to bat first, and put up a score of 85 runs in the mandated 10 overs. The team lost just two wickets. The score wasn’t enough as NDTV Media reached the target of 86 easily, without losing any wicket.

In the second quarterfinal match, Mercantile beat Mindshare by three wickets. Mindshare after winning the toss and electing to bat first put up 74 runs losing six wickets. Mercantile on its turn lost just four wickets as it reached its target.

The third match of the quarterfinals was played between Metro Communications and Indiatimes. The latter won the toss and asked Metro to bat first. Metro Communications put up a high score of 136 runs, losing just two wickets. Indiatimes lost the match badly as it just could manage to put up a score of only 65 runs losing six wickets.

In the fourth quarterfinal match, Studo:Thorn beat Draft FCB to reach the Delhi semi-finals. After winning the toss and electing to field first, Studio:Thorn restricted Draft FCB to 74 in the mandated ten overs. Draft FCB lost five wickets. In its turn Studio:Thorn chased the score easily, losing just four wickets.

NDTV Media and Metro Communications faced each other in the Delhi’s first semi-final, played on February 15. With a good bowling line up, Metro was able to restrict NDTV Media to 73. The latter lost just three wickets. Earlier, Metro had won the toss and had elected to bat second. They chased the score successfully and reached the Delhi finals losing just three wickets.

The second semi-final played between Mercantile and Studio:Thorn was won by the former. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Mercantile put up a huge score of 117, losing four wickets. Amit, who was declared man of the match, scored 59 runs and also took one wicket. On their turn, Studio: Thorn fought back hard. However, they fell five runs short of their target.

And hence the Delhi final, also played on February 15, was played between Metro Communications and Mercantile which Mercantile won.

The other teams to have made it to the national semi finals, are The Telegraph from Kolkata, and GroupM and Mudra from Mumbai.

The first series of the Amar Ujala Agency & Media Cricket League 2009 was held in Mumbai and Kolkata on January 24 and 25. The Delhi chapter of the League started on January 31.

The Amar Ujala Agency & Media Cricket League is a leather ball cricket tournament, organised by afaqs!, for media agencies, advertising agencies and media publishers. The ten10 tournament is being held in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Forty eight teams are participating in this three-city, month-long tournament.
