YouTube to show more content in local languages for India users

Language preference will be worked out, based on a combination of the user interface language, watch history, and location.

Online global network YouTube says its users in India will now see more local language content in its Home and Trending sections. Based on a user's watch history, YouTube will automatically identify the preferred Indian language - from Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu - and display more content in that language on Home.

The language preference is based on a combination of the user interface language, watch history, and location. If users think that YouTube has identified the wrong language for them, they can change your language. Or one can simply watch more videos in their language, and YouTube will gradually correct itself.

As a result, users will see more local language content in two places on YouTube. One is Home - where there will be more local language content such as movies and music, especially for first time users. Existing YouTube users will continue to receive great recommendations based on what they watch.

The second is in the Trending section, which will now show trending videos based on local language. For example, if Tamil is indicated as the preferred language, Trending will contain videos that are trending amongst Tamil-speaking users in India.

Marcel Gordon, product manager, YouTube, says in a post,"We are excited to help more Indians find content in their local languages, especially those who are coming online for the first time. We hope this will make their experience even more engaging and relevant. We're equally excited to help regional content creators reach audiences in their local languages more quickly", adding that the feature has started rolling out for all users.
