After Bangalore, Goa turns Indigo

Rajeev Chandrasekhar-owned Radio Indigo is bringing out its second station in Goa, an out-and-out English music channel, the only of its kind in the country. A Jupiter Capital venture, the station will play a vibrant array of genres of music from pop, classic rock, hip-hop, jazz, country to world music around the clock.

“Goa already has a few other stations playing a mix of Goan, Marathi, English and Hindi music, but no one is playing out-and-out English music which goes well with the image and culture of Goa,” says Sanjay Prabhu, director & COO, Radio Indigo.

FM Radio Indigo was first launched in Bangalore in September 2006. Adds Prabhu, ``If we can replicate what we did in Bangalore, I would be more than happy. Since our launch in Bangalore, we have floored the city with refreshing content and programming. With Bangalore, the Goa station will not only play the best in international music, but also be the first to break the newest international songs on the horizon.”

Embracing a mood-based programming approach, the station will play pleasant and peppy numbers at the start of the day and up the tempo as the day progresses. Geoffrey G Thomas, national programming director says, "Radio Indigo will serve up the best music of today dating back to the 1970s. We have internationally packaged programming to bring out the true international flavour."

Among a deluge of similar-sounding radio stations, can Radio Indigo stand out? English-based stations in India have has a poor run in India. Radio One, which was launched as college FM station playing only English numbers, had to change its strategy in Mumbai due to lack of takers. So, does this scare Radio Indigo? ``It's a myth and we'll prove it wrong. Moreover, Goa and Bangalore are two hubs of English music in India,” says Prabhu. As they say, only time will tell.
