Sanjoy Chakrabarty to head Dentsu India’s media division

Chakrabarty will oversee the setting up of Dentsu’s new media entity in India

Sanjoy Chakrabarty, national director, sports and live entertainment, Group M, has joined Dentsu as the chief operating officer of the agency’s soon to be launched media venture. Based in Mumbai, Chakrabarty will oversee the setting up of this new media entity in India.

Commenting on Chakrabarty joining them, Sandeep Goyal, chairman, Dentsu India, says, “Sanjoy (Chakrabarty) brings with him experience, maturity, bandwidth, stature and outreach, which will go a long way in building a new business and new organisation in the coming days.”

He adds, “His appointment is a step forward towards our goal of establishing ourselves as having a major presence in the media space in the times to come. This is also in keeping with our global standing.”

Chakrabarty was equally optimistic about his new assignment and looks forward to building up Dentsu’s media foray as a formidable force in the years to come.

He says, “To be actively involved in shaping Dentsu’s entry into the media space is both exciting and challenging. It provides an opportunity to experience the best of both worlds – implementing the global learning of the media management practice of Dentsu in the Indian business environment along with entrepreneurial skills.”

Chakrabarty has been in media for 22 years. He started his career at Mudra and spent close to 12 years there. He then moved to HTA/Group M, where he has been for the last 10 years. At Group M, he was instrumental in setting up the centralised buying unit (CIU) for the newly formed media agency. While there, he also conceived and developed the proprietary media rate benchmarking system, Media Mechanix. In 2005, he did a stint in Shanghai, which gave him the opportunity to work in one of the most dynamic and fastest growing media market in the world.

For the record, Dentsu is a global media powerhouse, which currently buys media through its two full-service advertising agencies, Denstu Communications and Dentsu Marcom.
