‘HT’ to start business daily; Raju Narisetti appointed head of editorial

Raju Narisetti is currently editor of ‘The Wall Street Journal’, Europe, and deputy managing editor of ‘The Wall Street Journal’

Hindustan Times Media Ltd, the publishers of Delhi’s leading daily, ‘Hindustan Times’, is ready to launch an English business daily. The group will launch a business website, too.

HT Media Ltd has also announced the appointment of Raju Narisetti as head of editorial in an internal communiqué. Narisetti will report to Rajiv Verma, CEO, HT Media Ltd.

Currently, Narisetti, 39, is editor of ‘The Wall Street Journal’, Europe, and deputy managing editor of ‘The Wall Street Journal’. He bears overall responsibility for European, Middle Eastern/African coverage for all global editions of the ‘Journal’. Under his leadership, ‘The Wall Street Journal’ received the 2004 Overseas Press Club Award and six ‘Business Journalist of the Year’ awards in 2005, among many others.

In the internal communiqué, Verma says about the appointment, “For our new initiative to be a success, we wanted somebody who had global experience and understood global trends. Narisetti is the perfect fit for our business daily.”

He adds, “We hope to create a world-class business daily under the guidance of Narisetti, make our business newspaper an unequalled product in the Indian market, and create an impact in the global market over time.”

Senior executives at ‘HT’ refused to comment on the appointment. Rajiv Verma was in Bangkok at the time of filing this story.

According to the communiqué, Narisetti will be relocating to New Delhi from Brussels, Belgium, on June 1.

For the record, Narisetti was a business writer for ‘Dayton Daily News’, Ohio, before he joined ‘The Wall Street Journal’. He started his career in business journalism as a writer in ‘The Economic Times’ in Delhi in 1989.

Narisetti has a degree in economics and sociology from Osmania University, Hyderabad. He holds a postgraduate diploma in management from IRMA, Anand, and another postgraduate diploma from the Times Research Foundation Institute for Social Journalism. He also holds a Master’s degree in journalism from Indiana University in the US.
