JWT bags a silver at the New York Festivals, 2006; Mudra is a finalist

JWT has bagged its prize in the ‘Best Animation: Cel’ category, for its film for DTC, called ‘History of the World’

The results of the New York Festivals, 2006, are out and India has much to feel proud about. JWT, Mumbai, has bagged a silver for its 90-second animated film for the Diamond Trading Corporation (DTC), ‘History of the World’, in the ‘Best Animation: Cel’ category. One of its other entries, ‘The Acrobat’, made for Hungama TV, has been declared a finalist in the ‘Media Promotion: Broadcast’ category.

Mudra, on the other hand, has two finalists to its credit, both for its work on monsterindia.com. The ‘Get Out’ campaign for the website was declared a finalist in the ‘Business Services/Equipment’ category as well as the ‘E-Commerce Service’ category.

The awards ceremony was held on January 26, 2006, at the Hudson Theatre, Manhattan, New York City.

JWT’s ‘History of the World’ is an animation film on the 200 crore year journey of the world’s most famous diamond, the Kohinoor. The credit for the film goes to Senthil Kumar and Hital Pandya. The animation has been directed by E Suresh, creative director, Famous Studios, Mumbai.

Senthil Kumar, creative director, JWT, Mumbai, elaborates on the creative idea, saying, “The DTC film is based on the insight that a diamond is forever, that it lives beyond the life of its owners.”

‘History of the World’ begins in a prehistoric volcano near Golconda in South India, from where the Kohinoor began its journey to its first recorded owner, Mahlak Deo, the king of Malwa in 1305. The film traces the historic diamond’s life with the Mughal dynasty, the Persian Empire, the Sikh rulers and, finally, in the Tower of London, where it is on display today.

Kumar adds that the animation style used in the film has been inspired by ancient Indian cave art, simple lines with dramatic punctuation to illustrate the high points.

For the record, the New York Festivals are more than 50 years old. The awards honour excellence in creative communication worldwide. In addition to the original ‘Film and Video’ category, the following have been added recently: ‘TV Programming and Promotion’, ‘Radio Programming and Promotion’, ‘TV, Cinema and Radio Advertising’, ‘Design, Outdoor and Print Advertising’ and ‘Interactive Online Communications’.
